A contribution to the moss flora of Hawaii, with the description of Breutelia griffinii sp. nov.

Abstract

Based on collections made in February 2011 in Hawaii, some species are reported as new to Oahu, Maui or Big Island, Brachymenium acuminatum Harv. in Hook. and Campylopus flexuosus (Hedw.) Brid. are reported as new to the archipelago, and Breutelia griffinii J.-P. Frahm is described as a new species. An evaluation of the phytogeographical elements of the moss flora of Hawaii has been undertaken. Most of the mosses from Hawaii are endemic (29.4 %) or SE-Asian (27.2 %), 17.7 % are Holarctic and 10.8 % are cosmopolitan. Pantropical, Neotropical, African, Austral, European, Oceanian and E-Asian species count each for less than 5 %. There are in part significant differences in the composition of floristic elements between the islands, especially Big Island and the rest of the islands.
