Cerithidea cingulata Cerithium coralium Cerithidea microptera allozymes genetic variation

Abstract

A total of 137 mud snails collected along the southern part of Sulawesi, Indonesia were analysed for 12 enzymes encoded by 14 loci. Two species, Cerithium coralium and Cerithidea microptera, were only found at one of four localities sampled whereas Cerithidea cingulata was present at all four localities. Deficiencies of heterozygotes were seen for several of the loci, mainly for C. coralium and C. microptera. The enzyme phosphoglucomutase was species-specific for C. coralium and revealed a unique allele for C. cingulata from the western part of South Sulawesi. The total sample was assigned to four groups; two of the groups corresponded to the species C. coralium and C. microptera, but C. cingulata divided into two groups, one consisting of the sample from the western part of South Sulawesi and the other of three samples representing the southern and eastern coastline. Determination of the significance of the differentiation among the C. cingulata samples requires further study.
