Abstract

Statz (1952) described Ceruchites hahnei Statz, 1952, from the Oligocene Rott Formation of Germany. He noted the resemblance of this taxon to the extant lucanid genus Ceruchus Macleay, 1819. Later, Krell (2000) regarded Ceruchites Statz, 1952 as subfamilia incerta within Lucanidae. Nikolajev (2006) subsequently erected the subfamily Ceruchitinae Nikolajev, 2006 based on the presence of a narrow prosternal process, partially divided eyes, and a three-segmented antennal club. Following this proposal, Ceruchitinae has generally been treated as a distinct extinct subfamily in subsequent works (e.g., Krell, 2007; Kim & Farrell, 2015; Yu et al., 2024).
