The ground beetles of the subgenus Anophonus, genus Harpalus (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Harpalini)

Abstract

A taxonomic review of the subgenus Anophonus Kataev, 2023, genus Harpalus Latreille, 1802, endemic to the Western Tien Shan, is given. The subgenus comprises four wingless species, two of which, H. karatavicus sp. nov. and H. gusarovi sp. nov., both closely related to H. cyanopterus (Tschitschérine, 1897), are newly described from the southern and middle parts of the Karatau Mountain Range, respectively. The fourth species, H. pterostichus (Reitter, 1900), is treated as a polytypical species, with three subspecies: the monotypycal (western half of the Chatkal Mountain Range except for its westermost part), H. p. parkentensis subsp. nov. (Westernmost Chatkal Mountain Range) and H. p. pskemicus subsp. nov. (southeastern slopes of the Pskem Mountain Range). A key to species and subspecies is provided. The taxonomic position of the subgenus is discussed. The lectotype is designated for Ophonus complicans Reitter 1900.
