Abstract

A total of 9 species and one variety of the Afrotropical Clytrini described at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries by a famous South African entomologist Louis Albert Péringuey are reviewed and commented on. The primary type specimens of four species were traced in Iziko South African Museum, Cape Town and one syntype of Lachnaea pinguis Péringuey, 1888 is deposited in Muséum National d’Histoire naturelle, Paris. The type deposition of other taxa remains unknown. Two additional specimens of Labidostomis insidiosa Péringuey, 1888 and Diapromorpha (Peploptera) zambeziana Péringuey, 1888 were erroneously labelled as type specimens. The following taxonomic changes are proposed based on the study of the type specimens: Merilia bella (Péringuey, 1888), comb. nov. = Tituboea parvula Jacoby, 1904, syn. nov. = Gynandrophthalma desertorum Weise, 1908, syn. nov.; Miopristis insidiosa (Péringuey, 1888) = Miopristis aericollis Medvedev & Erber, 2003, syn. nov.; Protoclytra proxima (Péringuey, 1888) = Tituboea rugosa Jacoby, 1895, syn. nov. = Protoclytra rugosa var. joliveti Gomes Alves, 1951, syn. nov. The genera Macrolenes Chevrolat, 1836 and Lachnaia Chevrolat, 1836 are excluded from the fauna of the Afrotropical Region. Three taxa are treated as nomina dubia because their identities cannot be established from the original description alone and without the study of the type specimens: Lachnaea damarina Péringuey, 1908; Melitonoma decorata Péringuey, 1892; and Tituboea sexnotata var. natalica Péringuey, 1888. Merilia bella (Péringuey, 1888), comb. nov. is recorded from Zambia and Zimbabwe for the first time.
