Abstract

Eight new species of the caddisfly genus Nyctiophylax are described from eastern Australia, increasing the number of Australian species to 16. The new species, Nyctiophylax alexanderi sp. nov., N. battoo sp. nov., N. convergens sp. nov., N. cornu sp. nov., N. downsae sp. nov., N. tenuis sp. nov., N. tessae sp. nov. and N. williami sp. nov. are identified by small differences in the male genitalia. For the previously established species, recorded from the tropical north of Australia, and one from Tasmania, new records are given. The range of the Tasmanian endemic N. repandus Neboiss is expanded significantly, now recorded from mainland Victoria, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and south eastern Queensland. The new species are described from eastern Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. A key is provided for the identification of males of all 16 Australian Nyctiophylax species.
