Abstract
A comprehensive systematic review of all described Eocene Cypraeidae, and Ovulidae from Texas is presented, based on historical literature and extensive new material. Newly examined collections include those of the Non-Vertebrate Paleontology Laboratory, University of Texas, incorporating specimens collected by the Bureau of Economic Geology and the Rio Bravo Oil Company during the early twentieth century, as well as the private collections of the second author and others. This material significantly expands the known diversity of these two families in the Gulf Coastal Plain.
Four new genera are proposed: Gigantocrossia, Marquezella, Sphaerovula, and Traceya. The following new species are described: Gigantocrossia riobravo, Subepona burlesonensis (second North American record of the genus), Garviea cervicula, G. prunellum, G. wallensis, Allmoniella lupinus, Allmoniella ? citriformis, Transovula parvabrazensis, Contrasimnia praecedens, Xandarovula praecursor, Sphaerovula ericksoni, Sphaerovula stenzeli, Eovolva texensis, Traceya zyzania, Lozouetina megahani, and Simnia akersae.
The following new combinations are proposed: Gigantocrossia furoni = Cypraea (Umbilia) furoni (Tessier, 1952), Gigantocrossia leroyi = ?Cyproglobina leroyi (Dolin & Aguerre, 2016), Naviculavolva (Winklea) scobina (Garvie, 1996) = Neosimnia scobina Garvie, 1996, Naviculavolva (Winklea) transovuloides (Schilder, 1926) = Cymbovula (Winklea) transovuloides (Schilder, 1926), Crenavolva (Squiresia) texana (Johnson, 1899) = Primovula (Squiresia) symmetrica sensu Dolin & Dockery, 2018, and Marquezella bulbus (Garvie, 1996) = Cypraeorbis bulbus Garvie, 1996. Lozouetina naonedosca (Pacaud & Gómez-García, 2020) is placed in synonymy with L. recluzi (Cossmann, 1898). New family combination: Garviea is placed in Ovulidae, homonymy of Squiresia Dolin & Dockery, 2018 with Primovula Thiele, 1925 is removed. The genera Contrasimnia and Xandarovula are reported from the fossil record for the first time, and the genus Eovolva is reported for the first time outside of Africa. These results substantially revise the taxonomy and diversity of Eocene Cypraeidae, and Ovulidae in Texas and clarify their systematic relationships within the Gulf Coastal Plain region.
