Abstract

The generic name Afroptiloides Gillies 1990 is accepted as valid, but not as a synonym of Acanthiops Waltz & McCafferty 1987. The type species of Acanthiops, A. marlieri (Demoulin 1967) is probably more closely related with Thraulobaetodes Elouard & Hideux 1991 than with Afroptiloides. Presumably, Acanthiops is attributed to the tribe Thraulobaetodini Kluge 2015 of subfamily Rhithrocloeoninae Kluge 2012. The genus Afroptiloides is divided into subgenera Afroptiloides s. str., Lunamontanum subgen. nov. and Biarcuatum subgen. nov., while the taxon Platycloeon Gillies & Wuillot 1997 is accepted here at a rank of genus; these taxa constitute the new tribe Afroptiloidini tribus nov. A new species synonymy is proposed based on examination of reared specimens collected from the Rwenzori Mountains: Afroptiloides (Biarcuatum) biarcuatum (Kopelke 1980) = Acanthiops io Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty 2001, syn. nov.; = Acanthiops gosei McCafferty 2002, syn. nov. The following species are described here based on new material: Afroptiloides (Afroptiloides) variegatum (Gillies 1991) (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); A. (A.) spirophorum sp. nov. (larvae and subimaginal parts extracted from larva); Afroptiloides (Lunamontanum) lunamontanum sp. nov. (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); Afroptiloides (Biarcuatum) biarcuatum (Kopelke 1980) comb. n. (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); A. (B.) griffithsi (Lugo-Ortiz &McCafferty 1998) (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); A. (B.) elgonense (Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty 1998) (larvae and subimaginal hind wings); A. (B.) acutifolium sp. nov. (larva); Platycloeon erepens (Gillies 1990) (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); P. subterraneum sp. nov. (larvae, subimagines, imagines of both sexes and eggs associated by rearing); P. tetraspinosum sp. nov. (larva).
