Opiliones Code nomenclature catalogue family-series

Abstract

This work is an in depth survey of all known extant and fossil Opiliones family-series nomina from the nomenclatural viewpoint, based on a corpus of 3788 bibliographic sources and aiming to serve as a reliable reference on the taxonomy of the order. A total of 194 available family-series nomina (5 fossil, 189 extant) are listed with dates and sources indicated, based on 161 distinct type genera in Opiliones. Of the 194 family-series nomina, 154 are currently considered valid and 40 invalid. Of these, seven are permanently invalid because either based on preoccupied type genera and one because otherwise invalid. Twenty one nomina were formed from incorrect original stems, all of which have been posteriorly emended. There are five unavailable family-series nomina. An unequal perception of five nomina as partly “Latinized” and partly “vernacular” is discussed. The nomen Gibocellinae Stecker 1876, hitherto in Opiliones, is suggested to belong in Notostigmata.
