Abstract

The generic name Vitta has been proposed at least three times for different organisms within the Animal Kingdom. Klein (1753: 19) erected the mollusc genus Vitta (Gastropoda, Neritopsina, Neritiliidae). This name was used by Mörch (1852: 166) in his Catalogus conchyliorum as a nomen nudum, then as a valid name by Adams & Adams (1854: 382–383). Later, a new rhizopod genus Vitta was erected by Folin (1884–1887: 183). Finally, Burt (1938: 21) proposed the name Vitta for a new cestode genus.
