Coleoptera Scarabaeoidea

Abstract

There are inconsistencies in the literature regarding the journal and year of publication of Hope’s “On a new species of Dynastes and other Coleoptera” (Hope 1841ab). In that work, Hope described five species of scarab beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeoidea), i.e., Dynastes jupiter Hope, 1841, Hexaphyllum westwoodii Hope, 1841, Pelidnota victorina Hope, 1841, Pelidnota adelaida Hope, 1841 and Pelidnota auripes Hope, 1841. For the later three species currently classified in Chrysina Kirby, 1828 (Scarabaeidae, Rutelinae, Rutelini), Morón (1990) considered the original descriptions to have been published in the Proceedings of the Entomological Society of London (hereinafter abbreviated as “the Proceedings”), volume 4, page 11, year 1840, and the same had been done earlier by van Roon (1910), Benesh (1960) and Krajcik (2001) for the Lucanidae species H. westwoodii. On the other hand, Moore et al. (2017) assigned the Chrysina species to The Annals and Magazine of Natural History (hereinafter abbreviated as “the Annals”), volume 7, page 147, year 1841, as did Cáceres et al. (2023) for the name H. westwoodii.
