Abstract

The present study gathered historical distributional records of butterflies collected in Paraná state and adds new taxonomic acts to ensure nomenclatural stability. More than 23,000 records of butterflies from 1,476 species are listed, among: Hedylidae (2), Hesperiidae (689), Papilionidae (29), Pieridae (43), Nymphalidae (328), Lycaenidae (207), and Riodinidae (178). Additional 25 subspecies names were recorded, mainly among Hesperiidae and Nymphalidae. Toponyms found on species labels and in the literature were associated with geographical coordinates and altitude, and are available in a gazetteer format. The following taxonomical acts are here proposed: new species-level taxa revalidation: Nascus (Bron) broteas solon (Plötz, 1882), stat. rev., and Synapte restricta (Hayward, 1934), stat. rev.; one reinstated status Cymaenes theogenis (Capronnier, 1874), stat. rest.; three new status to species-level taxa: Metrocles hydra (Evans, 1955), stat. nov., Mnaseas brunnea (O. Mielke, 1972), stat. nov., and Vinius istria Evans, 1955, stat. nov.; four new synonyms: Cobalus virbius hersilia (Plötz, 1882), syn. nov. of Hesperia papaea Hewitson, 1876, Hesperia ina Plötz, 1882, syn. nov. of Mnasinous (Methionopsis) phaeomelas (Hübner, [1829]), and Penicula roppai O. Mielke, 1980, syn. nov. of Tricrista advena advena (Draudt, 1923); and two new combinations, Cobalus papaea (Hewitson, 1876), comb. nov., and Tricrista reducta (Bell, 1930), comb. nov..
