Three new species of Pterostichus from Myanmar and Vietnam (Coleoptera: Carabidae: Pterostichini)

Abstract

A new species of the “pratii” group, Pterostichus (Orientostichus) fansipanicus sp. nov. is described from the “Roof of Indochina”. The new species is the third representative of the subgenus in the Phan Xi Pang [= Fansipan] Mt. and the first group “pratii” member that has been collected from an elevation higher than 3000 m a.s.l. A second species of the “punctisternus” group, Pterostichus (incertae sedis) dohertyi sp. nov. is described from Myanmar. In addition to the peculiar characteristics of the species group, this new species exhibits a unique structure of the female reproductive tract. The putative systematic position of the group is discussed and stated that it is related to, if not identical with, the “atrox” group of the subgenus Pseudethira Sciaky, 1996. Pterostichus (Steropanus) natmataung sp. nov., the first genus member known from the Rakhine Yoma mountain range (= Arakan Mountains), is described. The retention of many plesiomorphic characters suggests its quite isolated, basal position within the subgenus. This species is distantly related to P. deliciatus (Andrewes, 1937) and P. infissus (Andrewes, 1937). An identification key to the western species of the subgenus Steropanus Fairmaire, 1889 is provided.
