Crustacea Decapoda Brachyura Retroplumidae

Abstract

McLay (2006) described a new species of retroplumid crab from the Solomon Islands, western Pacific, Retropluma laurentae McLay, 2006, without realizing that the same name had already been used for a fossil crab. R. laurentae Collins, Lee & Noad, 2003. The latter, used for a Miocene crab from Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, has precedence so a new name is required for the extant species. Retropluma solomonensis nom. nov. is hereby proposed as a replacement name for Retropluma laurentae McLay, 2006.
The new name is derived from the type locality near the Solomon Islands. Retropluma solomonensis is also known from New Caledonia, Philippine Islands, and the Tanimbar Islands, Indonesia.
