A review of the ensign wasps (Hymenoptera: Evaniidae) from Macaronesia

Hymenoptera Azores Canary Islands Cape Verde Madeira new records

Abstract

This study reviews the ensign wasp fauna of the archipelagos of Macaronesia. The family Evaniidae is represented by three species: the cosmopolitan Evania appendigaster (Linnaeus, 1758), the Mediterranean Zeuxevania splendidula (Costa, 1884), and Prosevania fuscipes (Illiger, 1807), which is widely distributed in Europe and North-Northeast Africa. These findings mark the first documented records of the family in Madeira and Cape Verde, with no instances reported thus far for the Azores. Of particular significance is the first-time documentation of Zeuxevania splendidula in Macaronesia. This species, along with Evania appendigaster, represents the first records of this family on Madeira Island. The study also includes photos of the species, a host list, and a key to the genera of Macaronesia. Additionally, we discuss the potential impact of these species on native cockroach species, particularly in the Canary Islands.
