Abstract

The species-rich and predominantly Malagasy genus Stenopomyia Lyneborg is revised with 20 new species described and figured. The discovery of new species with distinctively variable morphological characteristics overlaps with members of the closely related genus Stenosathe Lyneborg. Stenosathe is consequently synonymised with Stenopomyia with two species (Stenosathe pilosa Lyneborg and Thereva brachycera Loew) transferred to Stenopomyia. A third species from Turkmenistan (Psilocephala pulchra Kröber), currently placed uneasily in Stenosathe, is removed from the genus and placed as incertae sedis in Therevinae. A revised key to genera of Therevinae from the Ethiopian Region and Saharo-Arabian transition zone is presented along with a key to species of Stenopomyia.
