Two new species of Seira Lubbock (Collembola: Entomobryidae: Seirinae) from South American mountains, with chaetotaxy plurichaetosis on the fourth abdominal segment

Abstract

Here two new mountainous species of Seira are described from South America: S. antonioi sp. nov. from the Brazilian Amazon, Roraima state and S. paramilloensis sp. nov. from the Andes, Antioquia Department (Colombia), both devoid of macrochaetae on the first abdominal segment and with a dense chaetotaxy laterally on the fourth abdominal segment. The new species are compared with other 10 known species which also lack macrochaetae on the first abdominal segment, and an identification key to such species is provided. Seira antonioi sp. nov. is the first species described from the occidental Amazon, and it also represents the first record of the genus to Roraima. Seira paramilloensis sp. nov. is the first nominal species of Seirinae recorded from Colombia. Based on this second species, the complete pattern of body pseudopores is herein revealed for the first time for a Seirinae genus.
