Crustacea Crustacean decapod new taxon bresiliid shrimp bathyal western Atlantic

Abstract

A new species of the rarely encountered caridean genus Bresilia Calman, 1896 is described based on a female holotype collected at a depth of 429 m off Cape Lookout, North Carolina, USA, being the first occurrence of the genus in the West Atlantic. Bresilia carolina sp. nov. shares many morphological features with two other deep-water East Atlantic congeners, B. atlantica Calman, 1906 and, especially B. corsicana Forest & Cals, 1977, to which it appears to be most closely related. A key to the five presently known Atlantic species of Bresilia is provided.
