Historical account and redescription of Bothriocera substigmatica (Lethierry, 1881) (Hemiptera, Fulgoromorpha, Cixiidae), an endemic species from the lesser Antilles

Abstract

The Cixiid species Bothriocera substigmatica (Lethierry, 1881) was originally described from Guadeloupe in the Lesser Antilles, based on a single damaged female specimen housed at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural History in Brussels. This study provides a historical taxonomic review of the species and its tribe, Bothriocerini, along with a redescription of B. substigmatica based on recently collected specimens, expanding upon Lethierry's brief original description and its distribution now reported from Guadeloupe and Martinique. The male genitalia is described for the first time with a precise morphological study, and detailed habitus photographs are provided. In an additional note, the recently proposed replacement name Andes synafenni Le Cesne, De Haas, and Bourgoin, 2023, introduced due to homonymy, is deemed unnecessary and is synonymized with Andes quadraticauda Fennah, 1985.
