Abstract

Taxonomy and distribution of the family Mythicomyiidae in the Canary Islands are reviewed. Before this study, seven species belonging to five genera had been reported, with six of them being endemics. Three endemic species are described as new: Empidideicus guguy sp. nov., Empidideicus tagoror sp. nov., and Mythenteles tamaragua sp. nov. Cyrtosia canariensis was described based on a specimen belonging to Cephalodromia humeralis and it is now considered a junior synonym of Cephalodromia humeralis. Cyrtosia canariensis f. tenuis is elevated to Cyrtosia tenuis stat. nov. and the syntype is now designated as the lectotype. Photographs and illustrations of wing pattern and genitalia are also provided.
