Abstract

A recent review of the taxonomy of Acipenseridae (sturgeons) included a number of nomenclatural errors. Because of the extinction threats to several species of sturgeons and their mention in numerous national and international legal instruments, it is important to correct these errors without delay. Sterletus Rafinesque, 1820 is a senior synonym of Huso Lovetzky, 1834, and precedence cannot be reversed. Antaceus, Gladostomus, Helop, Lioniscus and Shipa are not synonyms of Acipenser but of Sterletus. Kessleria is available from Bogdanov (1882).
