Acanthidiellum Kirkaldy, 1904 a valid substitute name for the preoccupied Acanthidium Montrouzier, 1858 and Polycarmes Stål, 1868 (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Abstract

The generic name Polycarmes Stål, 1868, currently used as a valid name for two species of Pentatomidae (Insecta: Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Pentatomomorpha: Pentatomoidea) from New Caledonia, is actually a junior homonym of Polycarmes Gistel, 1834 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). The substitute name for it is its only valid junior synonym, Acanthidiellum Kirkaldy, 1904, originally proposed as a new replacement name for Acanthidium Montrouzier, 1858 preoccupied by Acanthidium Lowe, 1839 (Chondrichthyes). The following two new combinations are proposed: Acanthidiellum armigerum (Montrouzier, 1858) comb. nov. and Acanthidiellum punctatissimum (Montrouzier, 1858) comb. nov. A habitus photograph of Acanthidiellum punctatissimum is provided while Acanthidiellum armigerum remains a taxon incertae sedis.
